Eucommia elastomer is natural polymer synthesizing in Eucommia plant. Its main component is polyisoprene with high molecular weight (trans-1, 4-isoprene), it is synthesized by the superposition of enzyme reaction on isopentenyl diphosphate(which is the minimum-unit of isoprenoid synthesizing in plant)and dimethylallyl diphosphate.

It is possible to syhthesize trans-polyisoprene by the materials from fossil resource chemically. However, trans-polyisoprene deriving from Eucommia plant has high stereoscopic structure and very high molecular weight because of the superposition of enzyme reaction and hasn’t any cis-polyisoprene in it, which is not existing in any kind of chemical synthetics.

So far our research group has been developed the technology producing coarse grade products of Eucommia elastomer with 80% pure trans-polyisorene from Eucommia plant and are going on the track of Eucommia elastomer production business. Now we are trying to produce higher grade products of Eucommia elastomer in laboratory level and developing technology to utilize the high grade products industrially.

Trans-polyisoprene, the main compound of Eucommia elastomer, can be utilized as thermoplastic resin. It is also possible to be more functional by some extra process such as vulcanization, epoxidation and maleic acid denaturalion. By blending with other kinds of polymer, it is very expecting to create a new blended polymer with a physical properties not showing in other’s polymer.
